Sportsmanship
Webster's Dictionary defines Sportsmanship as conduct becoming to a person who is fair, generous, a good loser, and a gracious winner.

In our fast-paced, ever changing world of technology, sometimes this virtue gets lost. It is part of our departments' goals to continue to provide positive programs and activities that foster this good sportsmanship. Educating kids and adults that all games need to be kept in perspective, trying your best, and having fun are the real reasons you should be participating in recreation activities.

Yes, I think it's time we thank those who responded to the city government's request to comply with city ordinances and laws. Let's look at the great positive response we have received from residents in taking pride in their homes, their community, and their environment.

One response is in the shoveling of their sidewalks. This is something that had become a problem with people slipping and falling and sometimes even unable to use the sidewalks at all. This has prevented lawsuits from taking place and causing the city and homeowners monetary loss.

Then there is the dog issue. Some dogs were running free and messing in lawns other than their own. Again the majority of loyal Waukon citizens responded. You see dog owners all over Waukon walking their dogs on leashes and carrying containers to prevent waste in other people’s lawns. Many of you called and expressed your appreciation for the change. Yes, we still have problems with some pets running free but we will take it one step at a time.

We have also requested residents to remove vehicles that are parked on their property and do not move. Once again a lot of you have responded in a positive way. Let’s all help make our town beautiful. Unsightly vehicles are not the only problem. Many citizens have responded by mowing yards, removing trash and taking pride in this community by respecting our neighbors. The citizens of Waukon thank you and the city government thanks you! Keep up the good work. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Can we all do better? Yes. It takes those that set the example for us all to succeed. I say again, thank you, the 80-85 percent, who show their pride and loyalty in your community of Waukon.

Please keep your calls coming. We can help you when you have questions or problems in your neighborhood.

The City of Waukon is named after John Waukon, a member of the Winnebago Indians, who roamed the prairies of Allamakee County.

In June of 1849 Geo C. Shattuck came to Allamakee County. That fall he built himself a hay shanty to shelter his family until he could build a log cabin. This was the beginning of the town of Waukon.

In Allamakee County, the towns of Lansing and Waukon had a prolonged and bitter fight over which would be the county seat. Originally, the Iowa legislature selected Jefferson Township as the county seat. At an 1851 election the county voters rejected this place and others, and Columbus became the seat of justice. In 1853, the legislature granted a petition to seek a county seat closer to the geographic center of the county. Waukon was approved in a two-thirds vote. The battle continued into early 1859, when Lansing offered to build an $8,000 courthouse if the county seat was moved there. Waukon countered with their own offer and won the issue by 420 votes.

A courthouse was completed in Waukon in 1861 for a cost of $13,635. In 1861, Columbus and Lansing teamed up to fight for the county seat. They beat out Waukon by 22 votes in an 1862 election. Waukon was unsuccessful in getting the county seat back in an 1864 election. In June of 1866, the county sheriff, also a resident of Waukon, led a posse to the courthouse site in Lansing and removed the county records. On their way back to Waukon, Lansing horsemen who subdued the men and returned the records to Lansing intercepted the posse.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled in 1867 that Waukon was indeed the county seat and the present county courthouse was erected there in 1939.

The courthouse built in 1861 stood empty for many years till the Wan Tan Ye Club decided Waukon should have a museum. In 1964 the Allamakee County Historical Society was formed.

The Allamakee County Historical Society has completed not only a museum for your touring but also a Red School House and Gjefle Log Cabin. The museum offers a tour of the original second floor courtroom which includes a display of law books, judge's chair and bench, witness chair and the jury box. Court can still be held in the 1861 courthouse if agreeable with all parties and if the present courthouse is full or busy.

A medical exhibit includes an operating table and instruments used by physicians during the early years of the county's settlement.

Photos of John Waukon, John Waukon-Decorah and others are also found in the museum, along with Winnebago baskets and Emma Big Bear baskets.
Two Iowa highways serve the city, 76 & 9. Waukon is within 40 minutes of the nearest interstate interchange, I-90.

City Code of Ordinances Chapter 135.12 DUMPING OF SNOW.

No person shall push, plow, shovel, blow or otherwise deposit or cause to be deposited any snow or ice on any public sidewalk or on the traveled portion of any public street or alley, except that snow or ice removed from a public sidewalk may be deposited on a public street on street frontages where no private yard or public boulevard areas adjoin the sidewalk.

This reminder to residents and businesses is provided so that property owners may make arrangements for snow removal prior to February 1, 2010 when the City Street Department and Police Department will place added emphasis on compliance with the above ordinances. City policy will require businesses to haul snow from their property that, in the past, has been placed on City streets and sidewalks for removal by the City Street Department. Snow deposited on the roadway resulting from the clearing of sidewalks where no boulevard area exists will continue to be hauled away by the City. Questions regarding these policies may be addressed to the Mayor and City Council persons.

Biddy Basketball Program
The Biddy Basketball Program is for boys & girls in Kindergarten thru 3rd grade. Basic fundamentals of basketball will be taught along with team participation. Teams are grouped according to age/grade and game rules are modified to accommodate the lower ages and skill levels. Smaller basketballs, lower baskets, and fun learning techniques are used with special emphasis on sportsmanship. If the child is old enough to be in kindergarten then they may participate. Thier games will be on Saturday mornings starting in January for 5 weeks. They show up at designated time and will be shown different basketball drills that they will do with their teammates for about 30 minutes and then they will play a game for about 30 minutes. No practices at any other time. They will play on a smaller court. 2 volunteer coaches are needed for each team. The new high school gym will be used. Registration forms will be passed out to the kids at the schools or downloaded from this site or can be picked up and dropped off at the Waukon Wellness Center. For more information call 563-568-6420.
